Instructor Michael Golino: Lecture - Monday 5:45-7:35 Center Hall 212

Lab Access

You have 24 hr. access, 7 days a week

Check the lab schedule for weekday times....

there is very little free time on weekdays, so anticipate working on the weekend.

Margarat Nee: TA for:
Sec1 = Tuesday 9:35am - 11:25
Sec3 = Thursday 12:45pm - 2:35
lab = VAF228

office hours: Monday 3:30 - 4:30pm, or make appt.
if I'm not in the lab check my studio (#243, 1st floor corner)

What to do with technical problems in the lab:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Post trouble reports in all cases!!
Otherwise nobody knows there's a problem,
then it doesn't get fixed and other students
will step into the same problem
.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ACS has a page on their website for reporting problems, including an online version of their hardware trouble report. They also have help files, including some specific to 228, though their view is often archaic.

Ted Nguyen is the Art Department's Undergraduate Computing Consultant. This means he is our liason to ACS. He's also an all around good guy - so be nice. His office is VAF 365, his phone extension is 23263.

There should be a Zebra tech assistant in the lab Thursdays from 7pm to 8pm, they can help with unix, and other general tech stuff.

I've compiled a page of resource links, and there are some items on reserve in the library.

Remember, some your best resources are your classmates.

Stuff that I'm forced to repeat:

Yes, you need to come to section.
Yes, you need to be on time.
Yes, you need to stay for the whole time.

No, you can't eat or drink in the lab.
Yes, you must turn your work in on time.

Yes, you will need to think hard.

Blecchh....
please don't make me do it again.

All about grades and how you can improve them:

Of course, you need to fullfill the technical and conceptual requirements of an assignment - that's a given.
I also expect to see evidence of thoughtfullness and mental exertion.

Revisions of work are allowed with these rules:

+ Late work is late work. Turn your assignments in on time or the grade will go down.
+ Revision does not mean make a whole new piece, it means improving the original piece.
+ Plan on sitting down to talk with me when you turn in your revision, no hit and run.
+ Keep all versions so we can compare them when we discuss your revision.

Beyond the assignments I expect regular, prompt, and evident attendance; this means thoughtful participation in critiques and lab time in general.

Appropriation is defined by significant alteration. Appropriation is acceptable, plagiarism is not.

Remember - this is an ART class.

CRITIQUES - aka: we're really not out to get you - or how peers can help you make your best work

How to give good crit - courtesy of Jesse Arnold - va40fall99TA

Giving good crit takes practice. Following are some guidelines for accessing work:

 1.  VISUAL/AUDITORY

  • what do you see or hear?
  • color
  • composition
  • text
  • images
  • navigation

 2.  ASSOCIATIONS

  • what thoughts/emotions do visuals/sounds evoke?
  • how do elements from #1 work together in communicating with or to you?

 3.  HISTORY

  • refer to readings/lectures
  • what concepts/precedents can you draw from readings/lectures that might be applicable to the work?

 4.  INTERPRETATION

  • based on what you perceive in #1-#3, how do you interpret the work? what do you think is at the core? what ideas can you identify as motivating forces?

 5.  EVALUATION

  • what can be done better next time?

adapted from "Telling It Like It Is"
by Karen Kissel Wegela from Shambala Sun

Many of us find it difficult to offer negative feedback to others. It is much easier to tell people what we have enjoyed or appreciated in their work. Nonetheless, we often have the responsibility of letting others know our concerns about their work.

In many settings, the purpose of giving feedback is to get the other person to change. This is basically a manipulative strategy. Other times feedback is given with a subtle, or not so subtle, edge of aggression, The message is not just that a particular piece is problematic, but that the person herself is basically bad. Unfortunately, many of us tend to hear feedback in just this way, even when it is not so intended.

There is a different way to regard the practice of giving feedback. It can be generous to let others know how we experience their work, We can look at it as an opportunity to be genuinely helpful, and also to work with our own obstacles to giving feedback on art work.

1. Remember that your intention is to be helpful. Refrain from offering comments that have no possible benefit, especially about things that the other person can't change.

2. Be descriptive and specific, not judgmental. Describe what you have observed. Don't interject your own preferences.

3. Try to offer a balanced view. It is difficult to hear negative feedback. It can help if you also provide feedback about what you see the person doing well.

4. Get to the point and be as clear as you can. Be direct and fearless. Sometime we can cause more harm and confusion by not speaking.

5. Offer what you have to say and let it go. It is important not to be attached to what other do with our feedback Sometimes our feedback is genuinely not useful, and it is important that we allow others the freedom and respect to disregard it.

6. It is not kind to offer negative feedback in a "hit and run" manner. We need to be willing to be there for the person's response, if they want to offer one.
