. . Marie Laveau, "the voodoo queen" of New Orleans, is buried in a tomb in the St. Louis #1 Cemetery. It is the local custom, that when in need of help for the trials and tribulations of life, one can go to the tomb of Marie Laveau and receive her help. The troubled visitor must perform the following ritual mark the tomb with an "X", knock on it three times, and after asking for her guidance leave an offering. Evidence of these visits can be seen in the multitude of cross marks; and in the offerings of flowers, water, beads, and coins that litter the front of the tomb.
