DIY: How to add to the library

For pamphlet binders like this one call LBS Archival Products at 1-800-247-5323 (they're really helpful and nice). This size costs $3.20 (in May 98), but they have other sizes to choose from, and will make custom sizes at no extra cost. There is no minimum order either. These binders are great for making your stuff incognito on the shelf. This is the same company this library uses.

To learn about easy ways to make your own chap books and pamphlets check out TT 157 .H547 in this library. The LBS web site (www.archival.com) also has information on this, like how to sew the spine. For serious bookbinding info go to the Z 266-276 section in the library.

If you want to make your stuff fit in to a certain place on the shelf you need to pay attention to call numbers. The Library of Congress makes the rules, if you want to know their logic go to reference and ask, or go on the web (http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco/lcco.html). The basics (the first letters and numbers) are easy but the rest of it gets complicated. There's no guarantee that it will stay exactly in the place you put it between two particular books the system is designed to be added to infinitely.

If you want to make something that will last a long time you need to use archival materials, but don't worry so much about it that you don't do the project at all. This means reading labels on adhesives and getting pH neutral stuff, and using non-acidic paper that you can get at art stores. Ask to be sure, but often the people in those store don't know anything useful as always, educate yourself. I attached less than ideal material (the transparency) with archival quality tape to pH neutral paper. The tissue in between is to minimize contact between the film pieces. Think about making neutral barriers between everything that might not be neutral, even typing paper that you used in your printer. Again, archival is ideal, but not necessary.
